Coil Tech/US Chiller Services (Bahrain) is one of only three organisations in the entire Middle East which are factory and industry certified to service all the major manufacturers chillers, including Carrier, Trane, York, and McQuay, says a spokesman for the Bahrain-based specialist firm.
For far too many years now, the people of the Gulf and Middle East have had to accept sub-standard work from manufacturer’s local agents when it comes to the service and repair of centrifugal and screw liquid chillers. In most cases, the response time is slow, the prices for services are greatly inflated and most importantly the engineers are not qualified, trained or certified to service and repair the chillers they are supposed to be representing.
It’s great to be back in Dubai! I was in the United States in January, and we were starting a major retro-commissioning project of the 45,000 RT Harvard Medical Center District Energy Plant. In March, when COVID-19 was starting to have a major outbreak in the Boston area, we were forced to stop the project and demobilise. The team of US Chiller Services engineers and I were forced to quarantine in the United States, until we could all get back to Dubai.
I came back on July 30. I was not even back for one week when someone called me requesting assistance, as their chillers were not meeting the Design Chilled Water Set Point. As I knew, it was uncomfortably warm and humid. I immediately asked what his entering condenser water temperature was and was told it was 37 degrees C. I asked a few more questions, such as if he knew the wet bulb design of his cooling towers, and I realised that despite being an experienced engineer, he was unsure of some of what I was asking.
Dubai, UAE, February 16th 2020 : Al Shirawi U.S. Chiller Services, experts in repair, maintenance, retrofit and servicing of large tonnage chillers achieved the prestigious ISO 9001:2015 certification, becoming one of the topmost chillers and energy services company to be certified by British Standards Institution (BSI) in the Middle East region against the 2015 edition of the quality management standard.
Being one of the global independent large tonnage chillers and energy services company with operations throughout the United States and the Arabian Gulf, U.S. Chiller Services provides specialist services for chillers and energy solutions, as well as operation and maintenance services for the district cooling industry. The company received this prestigious certification after a rigorous on-site audit covering all the requirements of the standard.
Any chilled water plant – from the largest district cooling plant to a standalone system in a building – should take advantage of Condenser Relief strategy
Many years ago, a particular OEM used to offer a packaged air-cooled centrifugal chiller. The chiller was a great piece of technology, because the centrifugal compressor in it was able to operate at rather high ambient conditions. In no time, the aircooled centrifugal chillers were everywhere – on standalone buildings and installed as part of large central chilled water plant.
UAE – March 7, 2019, – U.S Chiller services (USCS) is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the comprehensive operation and maintenance of 3 district cooling plants for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. USCS will be responsible for complete operation, maintenance, services and energy optimization of the three chilled water plants for five years beginning March 1, 2019. The three plants have a total installed capacity of 26,000 tons of electric driven centrifugal chillers. Re-commissioning/retro-commissioning services started immediately upon award of the plants to ensure chiller and ancillary equipment reliability and optimum efficiency as well as set benchmarks for future ECM’s.
Improper shaft alignment can prove costly
Many a plant inspection/survey has revealed that in almost every instance – pumps, motors, compressors, tower fans – you name the equipment, it’s almost always out of alignment. From newly commissioned equipment to plants that have been in service for years, the findings are always the same – shaft alignment is not correct.
Good Intentions, Bad Results
In the January 2018 issue of Climate Control Middle East magazine, I wrote about an energy company implementing an energy-control strategy on centrifugal chillers that was ill-conceived and was causing massive damage to the centrifugal chillers. Here, I am again revisiting the subject of improperly implementing energy-saving projects on centrifugal chillers, as yet again I have come across an energy company that had good intentions but, ultimately, implemented a control savings programme on a centrifugal chiller plant, which was implemented incorrectly, thus causing occupant comfort issues and not meeting savings projections, resulting in detrimental chiller operation and potential catastrophic chiller damage.
With a substantial amount of water cooled chillers in this region now starting to reach maturity and not being as energy efficient as the newest chillers being sold today, retrofit solutions exist for the market that will allow you to keep your current chiller and meet existing efficiency levels as well as comply with today’s refrigerants, all without having to face costly chiller replacement and loss of capacity.
